Here at the grove, we love our chickens. Right now, we have a flock of Welsummer chickens, but with the price of eggs fluctuating so much over the years, we decided it was time to increase our flock in a big way! We recently placed an order with Meyer Hatchery for 15 Lavender Orpingtons, and we couldn't be happier with the experience.
Why Are Egg Prices So Unpredictable?
Egg prices have been all over the place in recent years. There are a few reasons for this:
Feed Costs: A huge part of the expense of raising chickens is feed, and when the cost of grain rises due to droughts, supply chain disruptions, or other economic factors, egg prices follow.
Supply & Demand: When demand for eggs spikes (think holiday baking seasons) or when disease outbreaks like avian flu impact commercial flocks, prices can soar.
Transportation Costs: Since most eggs travel long distances to grocery stores, fuel prices play a big role in how much you pay per dozen.
All of this means that raising your own chickens can be a smart move! Not only do you get a steady egg supply, but you also have control over how your eggs are produced—no mystery additives, no factory farming, just fresh, homegrown eggs from happy hens.
Why We Chose Lavender Orpingtons
Lavender Orpingtons are a fantastic breed. They are known for their gentle personalities, good egg production, and beautiful, fluffy lavender-colored feathers. These hens grow to a good size and lay medium to large brown eggs, making them a perfect addition to our flock.
Our Experience with Meyer Hatchery
We've ordered chickens through the USPS mail system before, but this was by far the best experience we've had. The order shipped out Monday night, and by 9 AM the next morning, I was heading to my local post office to pick them up. There were several other chick orders waiting, but Meyer's was the most well-packaged. All 15 of our Lavender Orpingtons arrived alive, healthy, and full of energy. We couldn't have asked for better results!
The Mystery Chicks!
One fun option Meyer Hatchery offers is adding a "Homestead Helper" rooster chick and/or a free meat bird to your order. While we don’t raise meat birds here at the grove, we love the idea of an extra helper around the yard. The only catch? You have no idea what type of chicken you’re getting!
This time, we received two mystery chicks. One is black and looks like it might be a Barred Rock or a similar type. The other is a mix of white and brown, and I have never seen a chick quite like it before! I’m excited to watch them grow and figure out exactly what breeds they might be.
Raising chickens is always an adventure, and this order has been no exception. If you've ever considered getting into backyard chickens, now is a great time. With unpredictable egg prices, a flock of your own is a rewarding way to ensure a steady supply of fresh eggs while enjoying the company of these wonderful birds.
I'll be sure to update with pictures and progress on our mystery chicks along the way. Stay tuned for more updates!
